October 2003

The newly re-started Wednesday Celtic Session at the George Inn, Stone St. is now going strong, and will be remaining here until further notice.
KentFolk has recorded a few sessions now, and these are being added to the MP3 music section for the George Inn. If you play Celtic, or wish to learn more, or just to listen, please join the crowd at the George, you will be most welcome.

The Barn Dance in Littlebourne's thatched barn on Saturday 27th September went with a swing - excellent calling from Ned Gayner, and many comments about how much people enjoyed the playing from the fused Lonstone-Camine band.

The next dance there will be a Cajun dance, with Cajunologie, on the 8th March.

More festivals on the way, see the KentFolk Festivals page for more details.
The month kicks off with the Tenterden Festival
The Canterbury Festival is later this month, and the Festival Club gigs are on the calendar.

Public Entertainment Licence
The new act changing the rules for public entertainment has now been passed, and will come into force over the next year or so - I have put a few personal view points from the web and myself on the KentFolk site:

The Licensing Bill
PEL now to be law
KentFolk viewpoint
and a page with a set of truncated excerpts (14 pages from the vastly longer full official document, plus a bit from the official explanatory notes), that may be of use in finding your way around the new laws.

Wednesday Celtic Session
If you have been looking for the Wednesday Celtic session at the George Inn, Stone St. this is back in place with a swing, until further notice, but there are also now sessions in a number of pubs on different days of the week:

Wednesday: Wednesday at the George Inn, Stone St.
on Thurday there is the Three Tuns, 16 Tannery St., Faversham;
on the 1st Sunday there is a Celtic session at the Shipwrights Arms, Faversham;
on the 2nd Sunday there is the White Horse, Chilham, which is a mixed Blues / Celtic / Country evening;
and on the last Sunday the Deal Celtic session is now in the Ship.
- please do support them and the pubs.

Cajun
Cajunologie are playing at the hospital benefit gig in the Dane John Gardens, Canterbury on October 4th, at 4pm.
- O.K. so some other band cancelled, Cajunologie were put on early, and quite a few of us missed it !!

The Cajun Dance Night with Cajunologie, October 11th, clashed with a Canterbury Festival Cajun gig, so has been cancelled.

However there is a New Years Eve Cajun Dance with Cajunologie :

News from The Bottleneck Blues Club :

FRI 17th OCT
The Bottleneck _at_ Zaffa, Week Street, Maidstone. ME14 1RH
MIKE DOWLING (USA) plus JOHNNY DICKENSON (UK)
10 years as a Nashville session man have honed Mike's guitar picking skills to the limit of the instrument. He's appeared with Geoff Achison, Mary Flower, Joe Vanuti & written songs for Emmylou Harris, Nashville Bluegrass Band & Del McCoury to name a few. He's more than a bluesman, you name it, he plays it. Johnny Dickinson I'd never heard of until a CD popped through my letterbox ~ I loved it ~ I played it to Ben Andrews & he loved it. Johnny was the original guitarist with Paul Lamb & The King Snakes & now does a beautiful acoustic show which I'm sure you'll love. www.mikedowling.com for more info.
TUES 28th OCT
The Bottleneck Blues Club _at_ The Roffen, New Road, Rochester. ME1 1DY THE ANDY ROBERTS BAND (UK) plus Migden & Gibson (UK & USA)
Andy's band just get better & better ~ silky smooth vocals matched to an exceptional band ~ when they played Maidstone a year ago you all asked for them back .well here they are! Migden & Gibson are the soul drenched vocals of ex-Lee Sankey Band-er Dave Migden with the wonderful picking of Joe Gibson. Eric Bibb heard them on my sampler & couldn't believe they didn't have a recording contract ~ neither can I!!!!

(Apologies for the late newsletter - the Folk South-East IT Division has been on holiday with his missus...)

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR. . .
. . . when days start getting shorter, leaves on the trees turn brown and the autumn edition of Folk South-East's newsletter drops through the letter-box.
While you've been out there this summer enjoying the sun, our dedicated staff at Folk S-E Headquarters have been hard at work preparing a programme for your delight in the months to come. And what a varied, exciting programme it is! Just feast your eyes on the names below, and on the smart leaflet from the Dartford branch of our mighty organisation. Even if you don't know some of the names, be certain that, if Folk S-E puts 'em on, they're sure to be good!

RECOMMENDED SHOWS AT TRINITY ARTS CENTRE, TUNBRIDGE WELLS

A chance of policy at Trinity means that they are now concentrating on World Music, rather than the indigenous music of the British Isles that Folk South-East have presented there over the past twelve years. We recommend these attractions from their current programme:

TENTERDEN FOLK FESTIVAL
Friday 3 to Sunday 5 October

Tenterden is one of the most attractive towns in Kent. Its unusually wide High Street is lined with historic and listed buildings, with numerous friendly pubs and restaurants. It's the ideal place for a family day out, particularly when it's
taken over, on the first weekend in October each year, by a myriad of Morris dancers, musicians, singers, street entertainers and a craft fair. A particular attraction on Sunday this year is the traditional Romanian brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia, described by the New York Times, no less, as 'a band of speed demons, laughing its way across the lumpiest musical terrain'. For more info, phone
01580 763572 or visit the Festival's website at
www.folkspots.btinternet.co.uk

Hoping to see you at one of our events soon,
John Smedley
