Images, traditional
songs and readings about life on the land in Sussex at the time the Lewes
Phoenix Foundry opened in 1832 and the changes it brought to working people's
lives. The show was originally put together for the Lewes Phoenix Oral
History Project. The Magic Lantern and the concertina were at the height of
their popularity when the Foundry was also at its peak.
The images are supplied by Allan and Rene Marriott's Magic Lantern, the
Victorian ancestor of the slide projector. The show will include many rare
slides of old Lewes from the Archaeological Society's private collection,
including a feature on a visit by Sanger's Circus in the early 1900s.
The lantern will also show an entertaining group of novelty slides with
special effects, many of them humorous.
Music from Spare Parts Concertina Band.
To add to the general effect, the performers will be in costume.
In aid of the Sussex Archaeological Society.

Shore To Shore: From
the West Country to the New Founde Land
Thursday 7 April,
7.30pm
On Thursday 7 April,
Cecil Sharp House in London will see the only performance in south-east
England of Shore to Shore, an evening of music and song tracing the
connections and development of folk songs on their travels from the West
Country to Newfoundland - and back.
The evening includes rousing sea shanties and work songs, poignant ballads,
comic ditties, folk tales and recitations, along with powerhouse jigs, reels
and polkas on a variety of instruments, and with rich harmonies. And there
are also contemporary songs that document current social and environmental
situations in both places.
The performance was originally developed by Wren Music as part of the
celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English
settlement in Canada, at Cupids Cove, Newfoundland. Now the project comes to
England, and Shore to Shore at Cecil Sharp House is the only opportunity to
see this very special performance in south-east England.
The performers
From Newfoundland: A Crowd of Bold Sharemen
This band is widely
regarded as the finest in Newfoundland traditional song and instrumental
music. Each member is an accomplished performer in his own right, and
together they provide an unbeatable musical experience.
Jim Payne has been long known as a leading performer on melodeon, and
a collector of Newfoundland traditional music. He is also one of the
province's most prolific songwriters, as well as creating soundtracks for
theatre, plays and documentaries.
Fergus O'Byrne is one of Newfoundland's most renowned banjo players,
as well as a facilitator of programmes for young folk and traditional
musicians.
Gerry Strong has a vast knowledge of traditional tunes and in addition
to playing a wide variety of flutes and whistles is also a composer, arranger
and storyteller.
Daniel Payne is the fastest rising star of Newfoundland's younger folk
generation - a fine vocalist, and fiddle, accordion and flute player of rare
talent.
From Devon: Wren Band
Drawn from the array
of professional musicians that make up the Wren Music team, the Wren Band
consists of both vocal and instrumental dexterity from internationally
recognised artists.
Marilyn Tucker & Paul Wilson are renowned for their strong vocal
harmonies and instrumental variety. They are skilled exponents of folk song
in all its forms from Devon and the south of England.
David Faulkner is at the forefront of the English bagpipe pipe
tradition, and has won multiple awards for his playing of the Border pipes.
His work has included tours and performances across Europe and USA.
Nick Wyke & Becki Driscoll are two of the leading lights of the
new generation of Devon-based folk artists, specialising in traditional and
contemporary English music on fiddles and voices, with a particular emphasis
on tunes from the South West.

The Horsham Folk Club
programme is available at http://www.horshamfolkclub.co.uk/ but the next gigs
are listed below.
Sunday 27 March Open Floor Night A chance for everyone
to perform songs, tunes and readings in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
Always very popular.
Admission £2 (members £1). Under 18s free.
Sunday 3 April Judy Cook Not to be missed, Judy sings a huge repertoire
of (mostly) American songs and ballads. Her unaccompanied style delivered
with a powerful yet compelling voice underscores the deep respect she has for
tradition. Folks come away from a Judy Cook concert with a fresh insight into
old songs and the delight of having joined in plenty of choruses and
harmonies. Judy entertains with programmes drawn from her vast and
varied repertoire of traditional songs and ballads from the English speaking
world: from North Carolina’s Outer Banks to the Southern Appalachian Mountains;
from the Ozarks up to New Hampshire, Maine and eastern Canada; and across the
Atlantic to songs from England and Scotland. She presents these along
with her personal memories in a straight-forward unaccompanied style.
Admission £6 (members £4). Under 18s free.
Best wishes
John Byng
