Saturday 19th March
West Gallery Workshop for instrumentalists and singers at
Catsfield, East Sussex
Sussex Harmony, a Lewes based West Gallery group, is holding a workshop from 11.00am – 4.00pm in Catsfield Village Hall followed by a
traditional Evensong in the Church at 5.15pm. Do come along to sing,
play or just listen to the vibrant music. This was performed in our
parish churches and chapels before the Victorians kicked out the bands,
bringing in the organs and sanitised hymns.
We’ll be looking at some great music including material from Catsfield’s
original manuscripts dating back to the 18th & 19th centuries. Music will
be supplied. Most instruments are welcome. So bring your flute, recorder,
oboe, bassoon, clarinet, violin, cello or even serpent. There will be a Bring
and Share lunch.
The more the merrier as this music needs to be sung with as much enthusiasm
as accuracy!

Try old-style dances at the Frittenden Old Fashioned Night Out
The Frittenden Old Fashioned Night Out will be an old-fashioned and
atmospheric social evening at Frittenden’s Memorial Hall including songs and
party games, and old-fashioned dances led by Rosie Davis.
The evening will also include a 10-minute play performed by the village
school and party games, and music will be provided by the Horsmonden
Wednesday Night Traditional Music Class, friends and festival guests.
Saturday afternoon will see workshops where the public and villagers can
learn old-style dances such as The Veleta, The St Bernard’s Waltz and The
Heel & Toe Polka.
Another workshop will teach step dancing, which has become a great favourite
in the village.
Invited weekend performers include Will Duke (from Sussex), Andy Turner (from
Kent and Oxfordshire), Annie Dearman and Steve Harrison (from Essex and
Yorkshire), popular local singer Peter Collins, and stepdancer Kerry Fletcher
(from Kent). The organisers, singer and dancer Rosie Davis, and singers and
multi-instrumentalists Julie and Gavin Atkin will also be on hand to perform
and to lead events.
