Nest : The music starts here
Dear
Magpie's Nest Mailing List
Well
2011 has set off on a cracking start for us at the Nest and we want to share
the love with you all...
Tonight
we hand on our crown as BBC Folk Club of the year to 2011's new torch bearer,
thanks Auntie for letting us wear that one! We promise our head hasn't swollen
from wearing it so long. Loads coming up this month including our now confirmed
exclusive hosting of THE IMAGINED VILLAGE at Cecil Sharp House on March 1st.
Also confirmed, a lovely stage at the Co-operative Cambridge Folk Festival and
some other exclusives we won't overwhelm you with just yet!
Oh and you'll be pleased to know that the Nest's Sam Lee was the proud winner
of The Arts Foudnation Award for Folk Music last week. Champers all round (in
tankards of course)!
See
you soon
The
Magpie's N'est!

18th February : Kingsplace, 90 York Way, Kings Cross, London N1 9AG
£9.50 : 8pm
A special visit over from Norway, Jazz bassist Steinar Raknes and traditional
yoiker Inga Juuso have created music that calms the icy plateau wind and makes
the dark winter months seem snug and beautiful. In the duo Skaidi, Steinar
Raknes and Inga Juuso tear jazz and yoik from their respective traditions and
create a new, unrefined expression that transcends both traditions. For ten
years these two artists have performed together in various ensembles, they have
reciprocally influenced each other and developed a unique musical energy and
communicative ability. The result is a distinctive musical landscape in which yoik
and bass share equal pride of place.

A
night of wonderwomen; fresh from her major launch at Celtic Connections
Scotland's rising star Rachel Sermanni is in town for interviews and radio
glamour but is taking time out to wow us with her ethereal and most illustrious
songwriting. Sharing the stage of The Old Queen's Head comes Hackney's most
freespirited and ethereal of songtresses. Louisa Jones and Whiskey moon head
create a whirlwind of klezmer tinged, folk infused dervishes. 'Open Mic' also
abounds come early!
