Hi - You are receiving the Bournemouth Folk Festival newsletter as you are one of the mailing lists for Bournemouth Folk Club.

I hope the one day will be of interest to you.

Bournemouth Folk Festival on Saturday 12 March at Bournemouth International Centre

NEWSLETTER no 3

Only nine weeks to go to the first Bournemouth Folk Festival!

One of the festival headliners CHRIS WOOD is up for BBC Folk Awards 2011. This year he has been nominated in three categories: Folksinger of the Year, Best Album for ‘Handmade Life’ and Best Original Song for ‘Hollow Point’ (a song about the shooting of the Brazilian engineer Meneses in a London tube station). He has also been nominated for Best Male Singer in the Spiral Earth Awards. Chris performs during the afternoon concert in the Tregonwell Hall.

JOHNNY DICKINSON, dubbed ‘the most potent slide guitarist in UK’, also plays a concert at the festival. Johnny started out as a blues player with Paul Lamb and the Kingsnakes but adapted his techniques to traditional and his own original folk songs.  In the early evening, Johnny gives a workshop on slide guitar.

SLIDE GUITAR workshop – it is always difficult to judge what level to aim a workshop at. Johnny Dickinson can either: - teach some techniques to guitarists with their instruments, or  - he could explain and demonstrate  some aspects of his playing to a watching group. If you plan to attend the workshop, PLEASE LET US KNOW which approach you’d prefer.

CATHRYN CRAIG and BRIAN WILLOUGHBY will be headlining the Purbeck Lounge stage in the evening. Cathryn (from Nashville) has a fabulous voice and writes brilliant songs. Brian was lead guitar with Strawbs in their heyday. This duo is very popular on both sides of the Atlantic.

JENNIFER CROOK is a late addition to the line-up. Jennifer, in her teens, won the BBC Young Folk Award playing harp. She has formed duos with Henry Sears and Miranda Sykes and more recently released some beautifully-arranged recordings of her own songs.

Check out the full festival line-up on our website: www.bournemouthfolkfestival.co.uk.

EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY!
Our festival tickets are priced at £30 (early bird £25 before 12 Feb). This compares very well with other indoor folk festivals being held in Spring 2011. Cheltenham Town Hall in February, Fareham in April and Bristol’s Colston Hall May Day weekend charge considerably more for Saturday-only tickets. Working with BIC (BH Live) has economic benefits which have helped us to keep ticket prices down.

Please feel free to get in touch with any comments or questions about the festival.

Best wishes,
Paul Burke (for festival team).

The first Bournemouth Folk Festival takes place on Saturday 12 March 2011 at the BIC (Bournemouth International Centre). The event is a collaboration between BH Live (entertainments team at the BIC) and Folk Dorset (members of Bournemouth Folk Club). The festival uses lovely parts of the BIC which face on to the seafront: the Tregonwell Hall (adaptable conference facility) and the Purbeck Lounge (concert  room with bar) and the Tregonwell Bar.

Tickets can be purchased from the Ticket Shop at the BIC: 0844-5763000
or on line:

Best, Paul
