The two Lewes folk clubs the one which meets on Thursdays at the Royal Oak in Station Street and the one which meets at the Elephant & Castle at White Hill are combining their efforts to produce Lewes Folk Festival on the second weekend of October. An interesting and varied programme of 23 events has been set up over four days.
We are very lucky in Lewes to have one of the icons of English folk song, SHIRLEY COLLINS, living here and we are delighted that she has agreed to be the festival’s patron. She will also be involved in two of our most prestigious events, presenting her famed multi-media show America Over The Water at the Sussex Downs College on the Friday night and compering the Sussex Singers’ Night at the Royal Oak on the Saturday. That event will feature, amongst others, the fine singing of BOB LEWIS and NOEL DUMBRELL and some old Sussex dance tunes played on the concertina by WILL DUKE Many top names have been booked to take part and the festival opens with a bang on the 7th October with JOHN KIRKPATRICK giving a performance at the Royal Oak.
As well as performances there are quite a number of workshops and presentations including close study of traditional ballads and manuscript documents of dance tunes, workshops on old style church singing in this country and in the USA and another to reflect the growing interest in the revival of clog and step dancing.
The top folk dance band, THE RYBURN 3 STEP will be coming down from Yorkshire to play for the Saturday night dance at the Priory School Hall with SUE COE calling the dances as well as running the dance workshop earlier in the day. No fewer than thirteen morris and dance display sides will be dancing throughout the Cliffe area of the town throughout the Saturday and as you might expect at a folk festival there are participatory events such as singarounds and tune sessions.
The full programme for the festival is on the website at
www.lewesfolkfest.org/
