WHAT'S ON OCTOBER 2010
EFDSS EVENTS
Thurs 7, 14, 21 Folk Song in England
The return of the popular course run in February/March by Steve Roud. A series of six evening classes (started September) exploring the history and development of English traditional songs, from 1800 to the present day.
Focusing on England over the last 200 years, the course will address such questions as why we label certain songs ‘folk’, where did they come from in the first place, and how did they get passed around? We will also investigate who sang these songs, when and where, and how it came about that after a period of slow decline they were collected and ‘revived’ by later generations. Continues in October.
Level: Beginner to intermediate
7-9pm, course fee: £60
Booking required - contact Nina at EFDSS: 020 7485 2206 x.23/education_at_efdss_dot_org

Wednesday 20 Folk Rising
Presented by EFDSS and The Magpie's Nest
Following the packed-out events this summer, this is the second series of Folk Rising. A three-part studio concert series presents a sample of the freshest, undiscovered and at times radical music being produced within the indefinable folk tradition. With the burgeoning profile that folk music has achieved in recent years never has there been a showcase opportunity for the periphery musicmakers approaching folk from the ‘outside’ as well as those from ‘within’.
This will be a roulette of a musical experience charting the daring and the dangerous, the wonderful and the weird but above all suggesting how the future of folk will sound.
8-11pm, tickets £5

Saturday 30 Shirley Collins' A Most Sunshiny Day
Presented by EFDSS and Miles of Smiles
A rare opportunity for an evening with the legendary Shirley Collins. Shirley's show about English traditional music, with particular emphasis on the music of her native Sussex, features recordings, slides, contributions from actor Pip Barnes, and some audience participation.
With performances from Scottish troubadour Alasdair Roberts, playing an oblique, foreboding but joyous mix of reclaimed murder ballads and traditional but profoundly contemporary original works, and Glaswegian quartet Trembling Bells' British folk rock, rendered wyrd and vital by tumultuous underpinnings of improv and early music.
7-11pm, tickets £14
