Winner of two BBC Folk Awards 2009 Jackie Oates performs at Cecil Sharp House, with support from dapper-suited gentlewomen O'Hooley & Tidow.

Jackie Oates is a singer and fiddle player hailing from Staffordshire. Her unique treatment of English ballads and songs, and pure, haunting singing style has attracted increasing attention. In September she performs at Cecil Sharp House with material from her new album Hyperboreans, nominated for the BBC Folk Awards 2010 Album of the Year.

‘The girl is a genius’ Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2
‘Marking the full graduation of Jackie Oates as a front-line talent.’ fRoots
‘Expectations for Hyperboreans were high. On all fronts Oates delivers, with beautiful singing, innovative arrangements and an intriguing selection of songs’ ***** Songlines, Oct ‘09
‘Oates has a clear voice that is at once traditional and modern, as embodied by the spine-tingling closing track.’ Q, Oct ‘09

Since her departure from the Unthanks, the stark, haunting piano arrangements Belinda O'Hooley brought to the Mercury nominated album The Bairns have evolved and migrated into rippling neo-classical chamber folk songs with Yorkshire singer-songwriter Heidi Tidow. Together, O’Hooley & Tidow have created Silent June; their unpindownable, multi-layered debut album released on the No Masters label.

Tickets £12 advance, £14 on the door.
