Dear
Music Friends,
As summer draws to a close and the new music season begins, we would
like to give you some
preliminary
information about the next Oxford May Music Festival. The Festival will as
usual take
place
in the historic Holywell Music Room in the heart of Oxford. The 2011
dates will be from April 27th to May 2nd -
the
vagaries of the calendar making us next year mostly Oxford April Music!
As
ever the grand finale of the 2011 Festival will be on the May Day Bank Holiday
Monday; Easter
being
as late as canonically possible next year means that the week of the Festival
begins with the Easter Monday
Bank
Holiday, offering the temptation to take the rest of the week off and attend
all the Festival events! We will
be
offering you another exciting programme with our trademark mixture of lectures
on science and the arts together
with
concerts from some of the brightest stars in the musical firmament. The
programme is now almost complete and
we
are delighted that our lecturers will include Professors Brian Cox and Russell
Foster and the musicians will
include
pianist Katherine Stott as musician in residence, baritone Roderick Williams,
the Tippett String Quartet, cellists
Richard
Harwood and Jamie Walton and the Phoenix Piano Trio.
Next
some organisational news. The success of the Festival since its foundation in
2008 means that we have decided to apply for
registration
with the Charity Commissioners. We hope that OMM will complete the
process
of becoming a Registered Charity in the near future, which will put the
Festival on a sound organisational footing.
Thirdly
some information from one of our supporting organisations, the Pierre Fournier
Award.
Those
of you who attended last year's festival may remember the Fournier
Prize
recital
given by the brilliant young cellist Gabriel Schwabe. He will be giving his
other
Fournier
Prize recital with pianist Nicolai Gerassimez in the Wigmore Hall
on
Saturday September 25th. We attach the press release for this concert for your
information and hope you
will
be able to attend.
Finally,
could I draw your attention to our "Friends of Oxford May Music"
Scheme. As a Friend
you
will receive a range of benefits including reserved seating, access to the
artists, complimentary
copies
of the Festival programme and special events both during the Festival and
between Festivals.
As
we enter an era in which financial support from all public bodies is likely to
be greatly reduced,
the
support of our individual Friends is vital to ensuring that the Oxford May
Music Festival remains viable.
To
sign up, or to renew your status as a Friend, please either reply to this email
or visit our web site page
Further
details of the Festival programme will appear on this web site over the coming
months. We look
forward
to seeing you at the 2011 Oxford May Music Festival.
Best
wishes from your Directors,
Jack
Liebeck & Brian Foster
