                        A chance to hear more from a good local singer: unaccompanied English traditional, spirituals & more. We'll also be joined by the bluesman Max Spiegel of Mudcat Cafe fame on a visit from the USA.

 

SEPT  11         SLOE GIN     (£5)

Four piece band with voices, guitar, mandolin, melodeon & bass; mainly English traditional & traditional-style songs from four former Wasps in the Woodshed.

The evening will be MC'd by Diane and Steve Nevill.

 

SEPT 18          Lewes Saturday Folk Club workshop no. 134

                        MOOR MUSIC: DARTMOOR MUSIC FOR ANY INSTRUMENT

                        Mark Bazeley (melodeon & concertina) & Jason Rice (accordion, step-dancing) began playing in childhood absorbing the unique Dartmoor style from their respective grandfathers Bob Cann & Jack Rice. Rob Murch (5-string banjo) is a dazzling exponent of the rarely-heard classic finger-style banjo. The  workshop will cover some of the repertoire & style of The Dartmoor Pixie Band.

                         IN THE EVENING MOOR MUSIC  PERFORM AT THE CLUB Admission £6.  Advance tickets from the club or the website.

VILLAGE MUSIC PROJECT for any instrument

Places £25 10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.

The Village Music Project gathers the handwritten tune books of country dance musicians from the 17th. century onwards & publishes them on the internet for today's musicians to play. Some music will be available in advance & there will be a chance to inspect original manuscripts held in Barbican House, Lewes Castle.

Chris is a magnificent singer of ballads & other traditional songs. She has performed with Pete Coe, The New Victory Band, Bandoggs, English Country Blues Band, Red Shift & Ryburn 3-Step, & is a respected academic tutor of song, vocal techniques, drama & dance. She also plays hammered  dulcimer & McCann duet concertina. You are invited to bring at least one traditional ballad to sing & talk about. To avoid clashes with other contributors, please state your preferred ballad in advance. If your choice has already been taken we will let you know so that you can choose another. If in doubt about what counts as a ballad, please use the contact email or phone to ask.

FRANKIE ARMSTRONG: VOICE WORKSHOP

Places £30 Saturday November 13th. 10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.

A powerful & compelling performer, Frankie has been singing British ballads, rural, industrial, music hall & contemporary songs since the 1960s. She has worked with Louis Killen, Ewan MacColl, Bert Lloyd, Peggy Seeger & Sandra Kerr. She has a passion for traditional singing styles. The workshop will explore the melodic voice & how the body/breath/voice is our vocal instrument with enjoyable & relaxing exercises, improvisations & songs to release the voice. Music reading is not necessary.

TIM LAYCOCK; All-systems CONCERTINA WORKSHOP

Places £30 Saturday November 20th. 10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.

Tim is a fine singer & duet concertina player, actor, writer & tutor & a founder member of the New Scorpion Band.

The workshop will cover techniques for playing, performance & extending repertoire; we'll also learn some cracking tunes from the manuscripts of Benjamin Rose Daniel Rolls of Dorset. Music will be sent out in advance.
