CORNISH TUNES FROM MANUSCRIPTS for any instrument
Places £25  10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.
            Mike (fiddle, Anglo concertina, voice) and Barbara (harp) are experts in Cornish & early music. They are lively, enchanting performers. Mike has researched & published beautiful & unusual tunes from many important manuscripts. He is also a fine songwriter & storyteller & a Cornish Bard.
            Cornwall's musical history is complex, going back to the days of its Breton lords. The workshop will cover Cornish music from the Middle Ages onwards, with plenty of fascinating tunes to play & stories to hear. Non-playing listeners are welcome too.
IN THE EVENING MIKE O'CONNOR & BARBARA GRIGGS PERFORM  AT THE CLUB

MIKE O'CONNOR: SONGWRITING IN THE TRADITION

            Mike's songwriting style is distinctive but rooted firmly in the tradition. His songs have been recorded by Martyn Wyndham-Read, Johnny Collins, Sarah Morgan, Mike Nicholson & many more. He produced & directed the iconic folk operas The Cry of Tin & Unsung Heroes & recently took part in the production Cornish Lads.
            The workshop will cover the art & craft of songwriting: the first reasons for writing, the tools & materials available for following a traditional style, & polishing & performing.

The English tunes session which used to be at the Trevor Arms in Glynde on the first Sunday afternoon of the month has moved to The Black Horse. It starts earlier, at 2.30 p.m., and finishes at 5.30 p.m. as before. Bryan Creer leads on English concertina & fiddle. There is ample parking in the grounds of County Hall opposite.

This is Bryan Creer's regular free session for concertina players of all systems and abilities on the second Tuesday of the month. What happens depends largely on who turns up, but there's usually some part-playing at some stage and a few session tunes get severely beaten up.

This is the free practice on the fourth Tuesday of the month for anyone wanting to practice tunes popular in local English sessions on any instrument. Andy Warburton has compiled two unbound supplements, one of a further 33 trendy tunes and another with a small selection of Scan Tester’s material; both are available to people coming to the practice sessions for the not unreasonable sum of £30p, but limited to one copy per person. They can also be downloaded from the Lewes Saturday Folk Club website www.lewessaturdayfolkclub.org/.
People are also welcome to bring tunes they'd like us all to try.

A brilliant piano accordionist, Karen is steeped in Irish music as a performer, tutor & scholar. She has performed with The Poozies, Kathryn Tickell Band & John Kirkpatrick. She teaches at the Universities of Newcastle, Helsinki & Limerick, & for Folkworks. The workshop will cover 3 of O’Carolan’s works, arranged for ensemble, exploring arrangement ideas. For any player of intermediate standard & above. Notation / learning by ear will be used.
IN THE EVENING KAREN TWEED  PERFORMS AT THE CLUB.

MOOR MUSIC: DARTMOOR MUSIC FOR ANY INSTRUMENT
Saturday SEPTEMBER 18th.        Places £25       10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.
            Mark Bazeley (melodeon & concertina) & Jason Rice (accordion, step-dancing) began playing in childhood absorbing the unique Dartmoor style from their respective grandfathers Bob Cann & Jack Rice. Rob Murch (5-string banjo) is a dazzling exponent of the rarely-heard classic finger-style banjo. They appear at festivals & folk clubs throughout this country and in the USA. The  workshop will cover some of the repertoire of The Dartmoor Pixie Band including some tunes handed down through the generations. Emphasis will be on the lively danceable style of playing which is unique to Dartmoor.
 IN THE EVENING MOOR MUSIC  PERFORM AT THE CLUB
