Over 200 minutes of sublime live highlights set over eight nights – bonus tracks interviews with Stochelo Rosenberg, Tcha Limberger and Biel Ballester

It takes more than people and money to bring to fruition a festival such as this. As Le QuecumBar was created with a dream, so was the festival. After a bottle of wine in June 2009, with Django’s 100th birthday just around the corner, the decision was made, the ball started rolling and the people who believed the dream, helped make it happen. London had never before hosted a Gypsy swing festival; why? Not commercial enough, no one believed it possible, and too many obstacles. Well that was several good reasons for me! It took courage of heart, tenacity and passion to drive this project through with the Le Q Records team and all the others who had belief and true grit, coupled with unwavering enthusiasm.

The live festival recordings produced this commemorative triple CD that captures all the atmosphere of the nine sold-out nights. The atmosphere was electric, the music sublime.  These recordings encapsulate the essence of the festival, its music and performers, with all the tracks chosen by the musicians themselves. Some of the evenings’ introductions and interviews have also been included, so that you might close your eyes, get closer to the musicians, and imagine what it was like on those exciting nights...

If you are new to this music then listen and be captivated, then keep on swinging.  If you ever get a chance to see these artists live, go and support them. Nothing beats the live experience and every performer on those CD’s is worth the effort to see.

HOLLANDS GYPSY GUITAR STARS

paulus schäfer trio

This Schafer family trio is led by: Paulus Schäfer (lead guitar), Noah Schäfer (double bass) and Sendelo Schäfer (rhythm guitar). Like many Gypsy musicians, the Paulus Schäfer Trio is influenced by the legacy of Django Reinhardt’s “Hot Club de France”, but dares to look beyond. Having their roots in the Dutch Sinti community they manage to keep the characteristic sound and mastery of the style, always justified by the arrangements and virtuosity of Paulus Schäfer whose improvisations are very clear and evident, telling their own tales always searching for new horizons. It is not just Not only Paulus’ superb guitar-playing that justifies the success of this band but also Sendelo Schäfer’s butter-soft attack on his rhythm guitar and the gifted Noah Schäfer, the youngest, and a musical talent who effortlessly supports the fastest and most complex rhythms and a major contributor to the characteristic sound of this trio.   www.paulusschafer.nl

KLEZMER SWINGERS

“the sordid story of old jewish odessa… and old new york

Story teller, Wally Fields on piano takes the audience on a rip roaring roller coaster, helter skelter gallop, from the dives of Jewish Odessa to the speakeasies of New York…and traces the influence of the toe-tapping  Jewish hooligan music of the Odessa waterfront, on “roaring twenties” downtown New York…and into the swing style big band  jazz of Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. Stewart Curtis Clarinet/sax, Murray Salmon on Bass and Paul Jaysinghe on Trumpet make up the guys. With a backdrop of the comic and brutal Jewish underworld in both cities; the environment is coloured by the presence of Gershwin, Kern , Irving Berlin, Kurt Weill, Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson, Jimmy Durante, Danny Kaye, and Jimmy Cagney...with Dutch Schultz, “Gurrah the Gorilla” Shapiro, and Murder Incorporated lurking  on the horizon. FRIDAY 4TH JUNE

HOT FROM HOLLAND SUMMER SIZZLER

Infectious rhythms from the hot quartet;

THE STRONG AND SILENT TYPES

 Look out - The Strong and Silent Types are coming, but they won’t be silent tonight! Every summer, Gypsy swing lovers from all over the world get together in the small town of Samois-sur-Seine, France. The reason for this gathering is the annual Django Reinhardt Gypsy Swing festival that is being held here. Nevertheless, insiders will say that it's the campsite near the festival where one will hear the most beautiful Gypsy Swing all night long underneath the starry skies alongside the river Seine. It is here, where legendary Django Reinhardt took his last breath, that The Strong and Silent Types were born. Together they play acoustic music, Hot Club de France style.  The repertoire varies from Gypsy Swing, Valse, Musette, and Bossa Nova to authentic Balkan music.
