Orange Street Music
Club is proud to present:
An Evening
with JOE BOYD
Saturday 16th January -
8pm
Boyd cut his teeth as a tour manager in the
early 60’s for Jazz and Blues artists such as Muddy Waters, Stan Getz and Coleman
Hawkins, before going on to run the Newport Festival. This is where he
plugged in Bob
Dylan’s guitar for his controversial electric debut.
In 1966 Joe kick-started the psychedelic
movement in the UK, founding the UFO Club in London. This gave early
exposure to bands such as Soft Machine and Pink Floyd (for
whom he produced the debut single ‘Arnold Layne’), and changed the London
music scene forever.
Boyd was also instrumental in the rise of bands
like Fairport
Convention and The Incredible String Band, who pioneered
the fusion between Folk and Rock music in the late 60’s. Around the same time,
he was handed a demo by an unknown songwriter by the name of Nick Drake.
Boyd went on to produce all three of his classic
albums.
He was
also responsible for exposing artists such as Sandy Denny, Fotheringay and Vashti Bunyan.
And has continued to push the boundaries of recording to the present
day.
Joe will be coming to Orange Street for his
Canterbury debut to discuss his prolific career and his critically acclaimed
book ‘White
Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s’.
Musical support comes from Liam Magill and
Raven
Bush of Syd Arthur and more to be
announced.
This event is must for anyone with an interest
in the history of modern music.
