Dear Friends and New
Subscribers.....
quick email this time.
* This week we host
Sarah Savoy and the Francaidians at the New Empowering Church Venue on
Wednesday 20th January. This is kick ass authentic Cajun
music.
* Next week it's Mundo Jazz + Paris
+ Folken Open Mic _at_ The Old Queen's Head (please email to
reserve a spot or just turn up at 7:30!)
Oh, and we told you already we won the
"BBC Best Folk Club of the Year 2010"? Good.
It's a humbling accolade, let's hope we can "keep it reel". It's also very
sweet because we're not really a "club", more a "night".
Right?
Also, we're now Folklahoma and Two For Joy, and you'll get
emails from these come February, but both are still part of the "The
Magpie's Nest Collective". Fantastic.
Now on with the
interesting stuff - our shows this month and
beyond.....

KICK-ASS CAJUN MUSIC HITS
LONDON SARAH SAVOY AND THE FRANCADIANS Wednesday
20th January The New Empowering Church 1a Westgate Street E8
5RL £8, 8pm tickets
here
It is with great pleasure that we host a show for
Sarah Savoy and the Francadians. We managed to grab a show with the band
in London before they zoom off headlining all sorts of places round the
world, and this is set to be a great night of authentic Cajun Music -
which has long been on The Magpie's Nest want
list.
Here's what the experts
say:
"The Cajun
music tradition is one of the most protected species in American roots
music, a heritage handed down through generations and along the branches
of the family tree. It was therefore something of a given that Sarah Savoy
would follow the family trade—Pop is Marc Savoy, the eminent musician and
the leading accordion maker in Louisiana, while Mom is Ann Savoy, another
acclaimed musician and the author of Cajun Music: A Reflection of a
People. Not that young Sarah is merely the current caretaker of a
trapped-in-amber tradition. Although her band is undeniably a Cajun outfit
(plenty of mournful fiddle and wheezing accordion), she also occasionally
injects her sound with the twang of Western swing and the strut of
rockabilly. The result is a winning lesson in how to freshen up a
tradition while keeping a firm grasp of its roots.

LAST WEDNESDAY IN JANUARY
(27th) MUNDO JAZZ + PARIS
+ Folken Open Mic The Old Queen's Head 44 Essex Road, N1
8LN £6 Advance/£8 OTD, 8 - 11:30pm tickets
What can one say about a band
whose songs convey the dangers of environmental degradation, the
importance of racial harmony and the inherent evils of capitalism with
subtlety and intelligence? One can say they are called Neil Young and
Crazy Horse. Mundo Jazz, however, preach peace, love and understanding
with all the subtlety of a brick hitting butter, through their
ridiculously catchy songs, awful dancing and thunderously crass
philosophizing.
A beautifully subtle satire on the
likes of Bono and Bob Geldof, Mundo Jazz are also superb musical and comic
improvisers, frequently creating songs on the spot and veering off into
spontaneous chaos. Worried about your carbon footprint? Don’t bother, you
can buy one of theirs after the show…
