Friday 8th January
2010
Irish Night with Karen Ryan (fiddle) and Pete Quinn (piano) and Maureen Linane (accordion) of the London Lasses.
With special guest Thomas MacCarthy singing the songs of his Traveller family.
CD Review : Until the arrival of The London Lasses &
Pete Quinn, Irish traditional music as played in Hammersmith,
"Track Across the Deep" (2003)
acknowledges the sense of distance from the native musical and personal roots,
even down to the choice of the CD title. This is clearly a band with purpose and
clarity of vision. The music is strong and full of personality, the opening
blast of the Bohola Jig recalling another great London Irish band Le Chéile from
the mid-70s. Hearing Pete Quinn’s deft piano accompaniment recalls Reg Hall’s
approach and style and one is left in no doubt that this is a London-Irish
outfit playing predominantly London-Irish based music.

Return
to Camden Town Festival of Irish Traditional Music, Dance and Song
is pleased
to announce that the first of our preview events for the 2010
Festival will
take place on Friday 29 January 2010, with a concert at the
London Irish
Centre, Presidential Suite, 50 Camden Square, London NW1 9XB,
featuring John
and James Carty, together with friends and special guests.
Brothers James and John were born in London, of
Roscommon and Connemara
parents. Their father, multi-instrumentalist John P
Carty, was a member of
London's Glenside Ceili Band in the 1960s.
John
is one of Ireland's finest traditional musicians. He was Irish
television
station TG4’s Traditional Musician of the Year in 2003, joining
previous
winners Matt Molloy (flute, The Chieftains), Tommy Peoples (master
fiddler,
The Bothy Band), Mary Bergin (whistle, Dordan), Máire Ní
Chathasaigh (harp)
and Paddy Keenan (uilleann pipes, The Bothy Band), all
leading musicians
within the tradition.
A master of the fiddle, banjo, tenor guitar and
flute, John has been
performing publicly since the age of 16. Initially based
in London, he
moved to Ireland in his late teens and since then, has played
with
musicians of the calibre of Arty McGlynn, Kevin Burke, Jackie Daly,
Matt
Molloy, Alec Finn, Brian McGrath and Johnny McDonagh.
Since 2007,
he has been a member of super-group Patrick Street, touring
extensively
throughout Europe and the USA with legendary musicians Andy
Irvine, Kevin
Burke and Ged Foley. He has also appeared as a special guest
with the
Chieftains and De Danaan. He has released three solo fiddle
albums, two banjo
albums, three albums with various groups and has featured
on many classic
recordings with other artists.
John performs regularly with Chieftain's
flautist Matt Molloy, exploring
the North Connaught tradition they both love.
Together with guitarist Artie
McGlynn, they released a CD, Pathway to the
Well, in 2007.
James is one of London’s great traditional flute players.
His solo album,
Upon My Soul, was released at the 2006 Return to Camden
Festival. He also
played on John’s fiddle album, At It Again, which was
released in 2003 and
Joe Whelan and Liam Farrell's classic recording, They
Sailed Away from
Dublin Bay.
