FOLK MUSIC _at_
The Hawth

This year's Crawley Folk Festival sizzled in the summer sunshine as thousands of people from as far afield as Austria and France got into the festival mood at "one of the must see events on the folk calendar" (BBC South Today on Crawley Folk Festival 2009).

Highlights of the weekend included performances from Adrian Edmondson and his band The Bad Shepherds, folk legends Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick and Eliza Carthy who had hot footed it from Glastonbury in order to perform in Crawley.

Further high points were the stunning vocal harmoniies of the Carrivick Sisters and the performance of hot young folk band Mawkin:Causley both of who you can look forward to at The Hawth this coming season.

Never fear, Crawley Folk Festival may be over for another year but The Hawth has plenty of great music planned to see you through to next year. Read on to find out what's in store this autumn:

Jacqui McShee's Pentangle
Sat 26 Sept 8.15pm (Studio)

The legendary Pentangle expanded the frontiers of folk in the '60s and '70s. Since then, the band's evolving styles and various line-ups have continued to make groundbreaking music. One thing has remained constant, however - Jacqui McShee's unique voice.

‘Glorious stuff, deeply atmospheric and immaculately sung and played. The current line-up kicks up an absolute storm and Jacqui's voice is gorgeous' Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music

They're back following their folk festival success
Mawkin:Causley
Wed 28 Oct 8.15pm (Studio)

Not many bands can claim to being nominated for a prestigious BBC Folk Award before they've released an album, but Mawkin:Causley can.

Mawkin:Causley are brothers James and David Delarre, Danny Crump, Alex Goldsmith (all previously known as Mawkin) and widely acclaimed singer, Jim Causley.

With a heady mix of richly melodic vocals, melodeons, electric bass and acoustic guitar, they breathe youthful vigour and considerable energy into their folk-inspired music.
