Bill Evans and Megan Lynch + post
festival season party with extra acts: Katy Carr, Run and Plaster of
Paris Wednesday 16th
September The Bedroom Bar 62 Rivington
Street Shoreditch London, EC2A 3AY
Two of
finest Bluegrass musicians from Stateside deliver a concert of exquisite
bluegrass and old time American tunes and songs.
This is a rare
repeat booking for us, last time they were here they blew us away with
their Banjo and Fiddle tunes so we had to have them back on their autumn
tour!
We have also added extra acts to the bill to celebrate the
end of a successful festival season running stages at some of the summer's
top festivals....Katy Carr - recently turned to the 1940's for influence
and pioneering great music hall sounds; Run, a 4 piece Gaelic Choir
purveyoring beautiful harmony singing; and Plaster of Paris, seering
operatic vocals over about 10 octaves from our dear friend
Molly.
The Bedroom Bar is an exciting new music venue for The
Magpie's Nest nights - look out for hot events happening there in the
future from Folklahoma, Two For Joy and other
promoters!!

Ed, Will &
Ginger www.myspace.com/awalkaroundbritain
www.awalkaroundbritain.com
Ed Will and Ginger are three brave
young men who have taken to the roads of Britain walking, foraging and
singing their way across the land. Gleaning songs and melodies where ever
they ago, they have single-handedly reinvigorated the lost art of
minstrelsy. Each one the trio is a fine singer in their own right, but
together they present grand and spirited harmony and their pleasure
in doing so is evident and infectious. What is more, Ed,Will and
Ginger are cycling all the way from mid Wales to the Southbank for this
special occasion!
Alasdair Roberts
http://www.alasdairroberts.com Glasgow based Roberts is one of
a rare breed of singer, existing in the realm where traditional song meets
the eloquent and unearthly pen of his own gentle industry, to sublime
effect. He’s a much admired guitarist and a thoroughly modern performer
who has also absorbed ancient craft into his acclaimed albums and live
appearances.
Dan Walsh + Will Pound
'The best
banjo player I've seen in Britain' - Don Wayne Reno, Hayseed Dixie
'Dan is just about as rock and roll as you can get with a
banjo' - Leon Hunt
Dan Walsh is a banjoist, guitarist, and
singer. Will Pound is one of the most accomplished young Chromatic and
Diatonic Harmonica players around on the music scene today. Both artists
show amazing versatility on an instrument often confined purely to
American music, taking in influences from blues, funk, jazz, rock, Latin,
Arabic, and various folk styles as well as bluegrass and old-time.
Cath and Phil Tyler "Folk moves into a new era with Cath
and Phil. Their combination of earthiness and grit, raw yet heartfelt
and beautiful singing and immaculate playing makes this one of the
most exciting and most moving albums I've heard in a long while." - BBC R
3 'Late Junction' "One of the most satisfying - and satisfyingly authentic
- records of American traditional music to come out of this country in
recent years. Timelessly primitive and powerfully compelling.."- fRoots
Magazine "The twining harmonies recall the heyday of English pastoral folk
song" - The Wire
Thomas McCarthy Thomas McCarthy is a
man steeped in the tradition of Irish song, intoxicated by the music and
passionate in his sensitivity towards them. Thomas hasn’t been lost in the
wilds of Irish taverns, or British hedgerows or far flung lands all these
years though. Born into an Irish Traveler family, Thomas has in fact lived
most of his life in Kilburn, North-West London and only came to folk music
as a place where he could sing to an appreciative audience, songs learnt
from his mother and uncles and the several generations
beforehand.

Folklahoma Residency _at_ The Bedroom
Bar 62 Rivington Street, Shoreditch, London,
EC2 October 15th Seadog + The
Wright Family of Jew's Harpers Brighton's finest alt-folkadelic
muses signed to Folkwit Records alongside The Wright Family of Jew's Harp
Players progressive trio redefining the interpretation of Traditional
Music. The Most modern sounding yet oldest instrument in the
world
November 19th Los Chinches London's very own
Amazonian Cumbia band Los Chinches present their jungle grooves and
psychedelic vibes.
Chicha (named after an Andean corn-based brew)
or Cumbia Peruana as it is also known, evolved partly from traditional
Colombian cumbia and as much from the emerging pyschedelic rock scene in
60's Britain and the US. Peruvian groups such as Los Mirlos, Los
Destellos, Juaneco Y Su Combo and Eusebio Y Su Banjo took the Colombian
rhythms and put their own psychedelic jungle twist on it. The result was
an instant hit amongst the young crowds in Lima and the Jungle towns such
as Iquitos and Pucallpa, home of the mythical Juaneco.
London's one
and only Peruvian Cumbia band were formed in the heat of the British
summer, bringing together a diverse and enthusiastic mix of individuals
who all caught the Chicha bug. Their roots are set firmly in the Amazon
and the soil of Peru where this unique style of music evolved in the late
sixties.

The Ballad Of Britain: The
Concert
Featuring
Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy, Gruff Rhys, Sam Lee And The
Gillie Boys, Stephanie Hladowski
From spring to autumn 2008,
Will Hodgkinson traveled through Britain making field recordings in an
attempt to capture the spirit of the place and its people. The journey is
documented in the acclaimed travelogue The Ballad Of Britain (Portico,
2009)
Now, in association with The English Folk Dance and Song
Society and The Magpie’s Nest, the finest singers from the field
recordings come together for a unique concert that shows just how rich,
various and creative the British folk experience can be.
Gruff
Rhys is the leader of Welsh psychedelic giants The Super Furry Animals
and a wonderfully expressive solo singer in his own right. Performing in
Welsh and English, Gruff will showcase songs that filter the Bardic
tradition through his own imagination.
Norma Waterson is the
much-loved elder sister of The Watersons, the legendary singing family
from Hull. Norma has done more than any other living person to revive
traditional music and breathe new life into the old songs of Yorkshire and
beyond
Martin Carthy is the great innovator of British folk,
bringing his impossible-to-replicate guitar style and powerful voice to
traditional ballads and new material, both as a solo artist and with
Steeleye Span, Albion Country Band and The Watersons.
Sam
Lee is a resonant voiced young folk singer who has been seeking out
British gypsy ballads up and down the country. Tonight he performs with
his acoustic band The Gillie Boys.
Stephanie Hladowksi, born in Bradford,
discovered a deep love of ancient songs such as Willie O Winsbury and
Andrew Lammie in her teens. Blessed with a hauntingly affecting voice,
Hladowski’s feeling for the old ballads is
mesmerizing

Nathan Ball
Album Launch Ruth Theodore Support Wednesday
28th October The Old
Queen's Head 44 Essex Road London, N1 8LN tickets
We say: It is with great pleasure that Two For
Joy hosts the album launch for Nathan Ball at The Old Queen's Head. We
have enjoyed Nathan's music at many of the festivals this summer, and at
countless other gigs. The depth and quality of his music is certainly
deserving of a headline slot - and his music is characterised by highly
skillful guitar playing and thoughful lyrics.
They
say: Nathan Ball is quite simply an extraordinarily talented
songwriter. His beautifully written, self-penned songs reveal the humanity
of a man who sings about the world as it is – and how he’d like it to be.
A highly skilled guitarist, his use of open tunings and intricate,
finger-picking style make every note from his acoustic guitar
shine.
Frequently compared to folk legends such as Nick Drake,
John Martyn and Cat Stevens, Nathan still manages to create his own unique
sound – a blend of poetic lyrics matched with a powerful and distinctive
voice. A self-professed ‘bare-footer’, Nathan’s ‘bare feet and bared soul’
have become a trademark on the underground festival
circuit.
Nathan returns to the Magpie’s Nest for the opening
night of his first UK tour… For an experience that will draw you in, make
you think, and leave you feeling that if all could see what Nathan Ball
sees, the world would be a better place indeed… Not to be
missed.
