Cecil Sharp House Community Choir at the Southbank Centre

Under the leadership of Sally Davies, with occasional guests such as folk singer Sam Lee, the Cecil Sharp House Community Choir is fast gaining a name for its distinctive a cappella repertoire of beautiful, bawdy, funny, moving and surprising folk and traditional songs from the British Isles and around the world.

The English Folk Dance and Song Society welcomes the exciting all-female band The Shee at Cecil Sharp House on Friday 5 June.

Showcasing powerful vocals and instrumental prowess, The Shee present an adventurous brew of Scottish folk, Gaelic song, and bluegrass. Striking performances at festivals including Celtic Connections and Sidmouth Folk Week have earned the group a fast growing recognition as one of the best new bands on the circuit, hailed ‘...boasting some of folk music's cutting-edge instrumentalists and singers' (Daily Record).

With The Shee recently described as ‘...a revelation' (Eddie Upton) and ‘truly wonderful' (Jennie Macfie), the evening promises much for this don't miss musical event.

Family Dance!
3 - 5pm, Child £5, Adult £1 (Tickets available on the door only)

The English Folk Dance and Song Society is delighted to present Family Dance! as part of our vibrant Family Friendly programme of monthly events at Cecil Sharp House.

Join in with lively barn or ‘ceilidh' social dancing from the British Isles. Live music is provided from the Black Pig Band with instructions for all dances coming from friendly ‘caller' Jane Pfaff. Absolutely no previous experience needed! This is an event for children of all ages and their parents, carers and families.

Monday 8 June
A Singing History of London at the British Library
6.30 - 8pm, £6 / £4 conc., Conference Centre, British Library

Sing your way through London's history. Take a journey through London's songs and delve into the stories behind them. Discover the hidden meanings of street traders' rhymes, learn the songs of illegal professions and find out why so many Londoners left town to spend their summers 'hopping'. From the tavern to the gentleman's club, discover how London's songs tell the story of our city. But this is no ordinary lecture; we want everyone to raise their voices and sing! No experience necessary; just a bit of London pride! Come if you love to sing, come if you think you can't.

Everyone will receive a free copy of A Singing History of London - a wonderful new illustrated resource produced by Sing London in partnership with the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

A Hawk and A Hacksaw

Miles of Smiles productions in association with the English Folk Dance and Song Society are thrilled to be hosting an evening with A Hawk and A Hacksaw at Cecil Sharp House on Thursday 18 June.

Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, the A Hawk and A Hacksaw duo Jeremy Barnes (accordion, vocals and percussion), and Heather Trost (violin, glockenspiel and melodica) will perform a unique mix of modern composition and American and Eastern European folk.

A Hawk and A Hacksaw are touring in support of their new album, Délivrance, out now on Leaf Records.

Take 6 Concert

Take 6 is a major project improving public access to the archives of the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library by making six important collections available online. In celebration of both the collections and the project the English Folk Dance and Song Society is pleased to present the Take 6 Concert.

Containing songs from each of the collectors: Janet Blunt, George Butterworth, Frank Collinson, George Gardiner, Anne Gilchrist and The Hammond Brothers, this varied musical afternoon narrated by Shirley Collins and Tim Laycock will see performances from Andy Turner, Tim Laycock, Craig Morgan Robson, The Askew Sisters and the Addebury Village Morris Men.

A pre-concert talk on George Gardiner by Bob Askew (1pm) and the launch of The Axford Project CD by Craig Morgan Robson and The Askew Sisters will also take place on the day.

Flash Company: A handkerchief show at Cecil Sharp House
Tues - Sat, 10am - 6pm, Free Entry

Last chance to see this group show exhibition of new work by a diverse range of over fifty contemporary artists from the UK, New Zealand, Australia, U.S.A and Japan taking as a starting point a humble white handkerchief. Artists working in a wide range of media have been invited to take part, and all have been sent a single handkerchief with which to work. Artists include: Billy Childish, Alan Kane, Cathy Lomax, Matt Stokes and Bishi. More details including a full list of confirmed artists can be found here.
