 The Magpie's Nest

Dear Friends,

welcome to our first email in May. We have a number of great shows coming up this month. Tonight (Wednesday 13th May) we have a double headline night with two young upcoming alt-folk bands - Blue Rose Code + Urusen, with support coming from club favourites Chris Sargeant and Benedict Taylor.
Then Friday this week sees the second installment of Friday Folk at the Stoke Newington International Airport (the last one was rammed to the rafters!) with Celebrity Chimp, Katy Carr and Timothy Victor's Folk Orchestra. To finish things off in May, we have our last Wednesday show from FOLKLAHOMA featuring the amazing Gadarene.

Sam, Joe and Lauren.

Two For Joy

FRIDAY FOLK::Avant Garde
Timothy Victor's Folk Orchestra
Celebrity Chimp
Kary Carr

Friday 15th May
Stoke Newington International Airport
£5 adv, £6 on the door
8pm-2am

Following the sell-out jam-packed success of the first installment of FRIDAY FOLK, we here present the second, featuring and exploring the more outlandish and experimental end of the spectrum.

Timothy Victor's Folk Orchestra, a raucous ensemble fusing Americana and Eastern European sounds with a nice healthy dose of traditional Essex.

Celebrity Chimp - best described as comedio-folk-pop with slamming banjo, slapped up bass and some fatback drums!

Katy Carr - constantly pushing the boudaries of folk music and performance, Katy is an award winning multi-instrumentalist with many a trick up her sleeve. Will it be sing-a-long, who knows!

The venue is the quirky Stoke Newington International Airport, a hidden (not secret!) art space in the heart of Stoke Newington - hidden in the sense that it is tucked away and a little tricky to find, but is an amazing space a million miles away from what you might expect! Come check it out!

The address is:
The Stoke Newington International Airport
1-15 Leswin Place
N16 7NJ

(Leswin place is a cobbled alley off Leswin Road, situated at the bottom of Batley Road).

Gadarene

Wednesday 27th May
The Old Queen's Head
44 Essex Road, N1 8LN
7:30-12am
£7

Gadarene blends obscure traditional English tunes, virtuoso acoustic musicians and a unique approach to electronic sampling. It creates a sophisticated and exciting performance, drawing on many diverse musical influences, yet making a sound that is all their own. The band's repertoire focuses on unusual and compelling tunes, carefully researched from Eighteenth and Nineteenth century manuscripts.

Gadarene attacks these glorious tunes with the raw energy and verve often associated with the cream of traditional dance musicians. The electronic element, composed by band members, is created by exploring and sampling the sounds of the band's various instruments. These samples are layered and electronically altered, then added to the live mix, to create an exotic swirling sound, the real musicians interacting with their home-grown virtual band.

Gadarene is: Nick Wyke, well known for his ground breaking explorations of traditional fiddle music with Becki Driscoll, and an experienced performer in many folk and rock bands. Laurel Swift is best known as a ‘folk activist' and for her fiddle playing in The Gloworms. She brings her double bass to Gadarene, revealing some hitherto unknown skills. Matt Norman, championing the mandolin in current English folk, is gaining a well-deserved reputation for his virtuosity and eclectic performances. Gadarene produces fascinating, upbeat and original music, sure to get audiences on their feet.
