HAMPSHIRE
SONGS NEWS from Bob Askew
On Friday 15th May at 7.30pm there will be
a concert of the 'Axford Five' show at the United Church at Winchester
Mayfest.
Craig-Morgan-Robson and the Askew Sisters
present a concert of Hampshire traditional songs from five
women who lived in the nearby village of Axford. The show received great acclaim
when it was premiered at Preston Candover Village Hall and Gosport and Fareham
Festival. It will go on to Chippenham, Sidmouth and Whitby Festivals to
introduce the great songs of Hampshire to people in other
counties.
Sarah
Morgan adds:
"We’ve also just
finished recording a CD with the Askew Sisters, an album of traditional
Hampshire folk songs collected by George Gardiner. We’ve been doing the
recording at the marvellous Wild Goose Studios in Wherwell, with Doug Bailey at
the helm. Much of the research for the project has been done by Emily and
Hazel’s father, Bob Askew, and we really appreciate his support and enthusiasm.
We’ll be performing the songs as a concert set (The Axford Five) at a number of
festivals and we are pleased to say that our first performance in Preston
Candover went really well, supported by a tremendous display of photographic
material from the Hampshire Records Office. BTW, the name “The Axford Five”
refers to the five women from whose repertoires the songs are taken, who all
lived in or near the village of Axford, near Basingstoke. The CD should be ready
for Chippenham Festival."
