Subject: Songs in The Room ~ Laura Hocking

DrBoKarma introduces Laura Hocking for Second Sunday, April 12th
Songs in The Room ~ second Sunday afternoon of the month ~ Blackboys Inn

Laura Hocking plays Songs in The Room
Sunday April 12th 2009 ~ from 2.00pm

According to Ms Hocking, she was ‘born in the North, educated in the Middle and moved to the South.’
So there we have it: the trend is for steady progress towards Sussex and she reaches the Blackboys Inn on Sunday April 12th, soon after supporting The Mekons at Brixton Windmill. How Mae West and David Lynch come to appear among Laura’s influences which, she says, lie behind her vaudeville character portraits, one really has to hear to understand. There will be a special opportunity to do so, when Laura performs live at our next ‘Songs in The Room’ songwriter showcase.

DrBo says: “I met Laura in ‘Platforms’ magazine, which has been championing her work for a while. She’s a wonderful lyricist – some of her observations are really sharp and her melodic, straightforward folk style of song writing reminds me of the late great Jake Thackray and his heroes, the chansonniers Brel and Brassens. We’re in for a treat because Laura sings beautifully, in a brilliant, clear, matter-of-fact way, with all sorts of artful little inflections that underline and illustrate the words… and she can whistle!”
