Subject: TWISTED FOLK MAILOUT-WINTER
2008
Hi people...
Ok, firstly, many thanks to everyone who contacted me
with new name suggestions for the gigs..ranging from the sublime to the
ridiculous (!), i have finally settled on..TWILIGHT FOLK. Hope that dosent sound
too safe, but all the other good ones seemed to be used up! And it was the
closest to TWISTED...which a lot of people were already comfortable with. So
there we go.
Secondly, below is the info for the next gig-the amazing ROBB
JOHNSON, plus local acts DROHNE, and RELIG ORAN...cant wait for this one myself,
another eclectic (and twisted?!) line up..hope you can make it!
Other gigs
are in the pipeline, but as yet, i will remain mysterious over details, until
they are confirmed...the one definate evening I can reveal for next year (May
1st, poss 2nd...) though is another gig at Orange Street, featuring THE SONS OF
NOEL AND ADRIAN (http://www.myspace.com/sonsofnoelandadrian) , with support from
Shoreline.....this is an act I first became aware of live at the End of the Road
festival, and they were absolutely stunning, a huge collection of multi
instrumentalists..in their own words-
"Closely resembling a giant centipede
in motion Sons of Noel and Adrian grew up in the midlands with many like-minded
musical folk. A couple of years ago they moved to Brighton to gather more legs
and are now a fully formed outfit with sometimes as many as ten members or as
few as five. The music is acoustic and falls loosely into the progressive folk
niche. At the core are Jacob and Toms tumbling guitars, joined by a colourful
host of other instruments to create music that ranges from Shanty to Schoenburg,
from deep underground to just above the surface and muses on whether excess can
make you a better person and what's to do when your credit's all used up and
there's nowhere to go"...so now you know!
Check them out in the meantime,
their debut album is pretty magical...
Ok, other stuff-the wonderful OWL
SERVICE have another gig this year-
The Owl
Service
12-21-2008 19:00 at A MIDWICH
MIDWINTER at The Ship PH with THE KITTIWAKES, THE OWL SERVICE & THE
HONEYGALES
, Leigh-on-sea,
Cost: £4 in advance
The
second annual Midwich Records Midwinter celebration - live performances from The
Honeygales, The Kittiwakes, The Owl Service and more, plus a seasonal open mic
session (email infor_at_midwich-cuckoos_dot_co_dot_uk to book a slot). £4 in advance, £5 on
the door - advance tickets available from www.midwich-cuckoos.co.uk (all
proceeds from the evening go to the Leigh Folk Festival).
Also, TRYAD,
who supported the OWL SERVICE at the last gig have just returned from playing in
Paris, and Naomy, their charismatic and very talented cellist/singer, has just
joined up to perform with local artist KIM THOMPSETT (http://www.myspace.com/kimthompsett), whose
amazing new album (see below) is out now, for fans of VASHTI BUNYAN, EARLY
FAIRPORT etc, its well worth checking out!-
Songs from the Uglee Meadow' is now finally out
on release.
"Featuring 10 original
tracks graced by the talents of Dave Kent on guitar, Will Summers (Circulus,
Princes in the Tower) on crumhorns, flute and recorder, Philip G Martin (Drohne)
on hurdy gurdy and pipes, Sarah Tadros on fiddle and Ian Tullet (ex-Ugenix) on
percussion, the album flows among rushing streams and under shady willows,
dancing around the oak trees in the twilight mists and meandering in a somewhat
timeless fashion up onto the high and lonely moors for a rather epic
finale. It's all been mastered on some rather clever analog gadgetry to
give it a really warm sound. I'm releasing it on my own label, Meniscus
Hump Records.
The CD package also
contains a pull-out booklet designed and painted in fabulous watercolours by the
wonderful fantasy artist, Esther Remmington which echoes perfectly the flow and
essence of the songs. It's all come together so beautifully with
everything slotting into place at just the right time, it really feels like
there's a magical positivity surrounding the whole project, so I hope that comes
across.
Right now it is only
available from my MySpace page by clicking on the BUY IT NOW button. In a
few day's time it will be available from Amie Street (http://amiestreet.com/music/kim-thompsett/) for
download. It will also be available in a few weeks on all the major
download sites."
Ok, thats all for now, I hope to see you
all again soon...
Have a wonderful and Twisted Yuletide!

DROHNE-
“In the
post-psychedelic London of 1968 an impressionable young Phil Martin encountered
the hurdy-gurdy of the first time; yet it was to be 20 years before this
life-changing experience would culminate in the finding of a playable
instrument.
The 70s and 80s were filled with many diverse musical projects;
including, playing guitar with Hawkwind's Robert Calvert and new wave pioneers
The Record Players, whose music has recently been re-discovered due to inclusion
on the Messthetics compilations from US label Hyped to Death.
Phil then
teamed-up with early woodwind player Geoff Huggins {aka Geoff X, Zappa Purcell
etc} in The Explorers Club who played a melange of medieval punk and English
morris music, before a chance encounter with Radio Tirane opened the floodgates
to European influences.
It was while checking-out Albanian music at a
festival in France that, the still impressionable, Philip Martin stumbled into
hurdy-gurdy heaven. The next few years were spent immersed in the traditional
dance music of central France; however, the lure of psychedelia would not go
away and in the 90s he played hurdy-gurdy on several dance albums, including the
groundbreaking John Barlycorn 2000 by The Knights of the Occasional Table.
In 1994 Philip G Martin put out his 1st solo album Vielle Sauvage, three
releases later, Hurdy-Gurdy Mandrohne follows that same eclectic musical path,
the seeds of which were originally sown over a quarter of a century earlier.
Although, he draws on influences rooted in a bygone age, and uses instruments
normally associated with European traditional music, Philip Martin, as Drohne,
makes music that is essentially contemporary English”
RELIG ORAN
-
“Relig Oran mix the sounds of the African Kalimba, driving percussion,
fiddle and bouzouki with the traditional music of England, Ireland and Brittany.
With innovation and dynamics they give the music a contemporary and exciting
twist, while tipping their battered caps to the long journey from the 60’s and
70’s psychedelic rock / acid folk. They have been described variously as
‘prog-folk’ and ‘goth-folk’. Yet at the same time Relig Oran keep the spirit,
drive and depth of the music. A respect for the tradition is always at the very
heart of Relig Oran’s music, and though there are some exciting detours on the
journey, the Relig Oran sound is always based on a deep love of traditional
European
music“
