Brighton Acoustic Session
The guests next Monday, February 2nd, at The Lord Nelson are
The Rude Mechanicals
The well-established local duo of Ray Chandler and Barry Ruffell will be joined by composer Jeremy Sherman.
Tunes from the British Isles, Europe and America are played on an array of instruments which can include fiddle, concertina, guitar, banjo, flute, whistle, piccolo, mandolin, mandola, bodhran, pipes and trombone - to name just a few!
Songs in a variety of styles, from bible-thumpin’ glory songs to blues and ballads, from music-hall to sheer nonsense.
Ray’s outstanding multi-instrumental virtuosity has twice been featured on BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction, while Barry was for many years the frontman of Uncle John’s Band.
Jeremy’s music has been used on all the main terrestrial and satellite TV channels in programmes such as Scrap Heap Challenge (Channel 4) and Seven Man Made Wonders (BBC2), as well as by programmes in the USA and Japan.

Subject: What's On in Horsham Area

The Horsham Folk Club programme is at www.horshamfolkclub.co.uk but here is an extract for the next two weeks:

Sunday 1st February  The Miserable Rich  The Miserable Rich are an exceptional, young band from Brighton. The band consists of Will Calderbank (cello), Mike Siddell (violin), Jim Briffett (guitar), Rhys Lovell (guitar) and James de Malplaquet vocals.  In less than two years these musicians are already creating a big name for themselves. They will appear at Horsham following their successful tour of Germany, a live appearance with Marc Riley on BBC Radio 6 Music and a number of gigs around the UK.
Their sound is hard to define. It's very original, inventive and interesting - something like a classical chamber group turned to foot-tapping light-headed swing. It's a sound and a style that might have been influenced by Tom Waites - a sort of off the wall folk. James de Malplaquet sings the cheeky, whacky, ironic lyrics with an engaging, charming, gentle voice. This will be a different kind of folk club evening.
Nearly a hundred and fifty thousand people have logged onto the Miserable's Myspace website where their songs may be sampled. This band could go far.

Admission is £5(£3 for members) Under 18 free.

Sunday 8th February  Tom McConville and David Newey  Tom is one of the most revered fiddle players in the country.  Other star performers such as Seth Lakeman and Dave Swarbrick speak of Tom McConville, the Newcastle fiddle player with awe.  Tom developed his styles and techniques by studying the masters Sean McGuire, Aly Bain, Stephane Grapelli and Bluegrass legend Byron Berline. This background gives Tom an endless variety of interpretations to his songs and tunes.  His performances encompass fast, rhythmic dance tunes - through beautiful slow airs and great singing - all presented with his inimitable sense of humour energy and warmth.  Renowned for his musical accompaniments, Tom has played on literally hundreds of albums. The list includes: Barbara Dixon, Richard Thompson, Allan Taylor and Lindisfarne.

This Sunday Tom will be accompanied by guitarist David Newey who has claims to fame in his own right as a singer songwriter, and a sought after accompanists. He has recently toured with bands Rubus, Nandobinyan, Arlen and with Christi Andropolis. David can produce driving rhythms and beautiful melodies, and incorporates both finger style and flat-picking. He has performed at major festivals and concerts throughout the UK, Europe and the USA.

Admission is only £5 (£3 for members). Under 18 free.
