Christmas Champions

Chris Wood, Hugh Lupton + English Acoustic Collective & Olivia Ross

Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regents Park Road, London NW1 7AY

Christmas Champions was originally written for BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction first performed in 2007 at The Barbican, it's now a live multimedia show commissioned by The Sage Gateshead . BBC Folk Award winning duo Chris Wood and Hugh Lupton are joined by The English Acoustic Collective and Olivia Ross in a performance that mixes the recorded voices of past generations with ritual theatre, seasonal song, storytelling and music in a celebration of England’s most enduring midwinter custom: The Mummers Play.

The show combines the music of midwinter, both choral and instrumental, with new songs and re-workings of established carols, worked into field recordings of Herbie Smith's reminiscences of mumming in the Medway valley at the turn of the last century. Hugh Lupton's narrative constantly contextualises the music and the singers reciprocate, weaving and compounding imagery, parable and drama. It is the true, native, vernacular mystery play and this performance, directed by Tim Dalling, brings it vividly to life.

The Long Notes
The Old Queen's Head, 44 Essex Rd, Angel

Described by the Scotsman in a five-star review as ‘truly something else’, The Long Notes unite the revered talents of accordionist Colette O’Leary, fiddler Jamie Smith and banjo and mandolin player Brian Kelly. All three musicians have a wealth of touring experience and came together as a group through north London’s ever-vibrant folk scene.

The Long Notes' ensemble synergy magically surpasses the sum of its parts, with captivating arrangements of Scottish, Irish, French, Galician, contemporary and original tunes, their playing "nothing short of sublime, the dance sets implausibly quick yet immaculately detailed, brilliantly intense yet utterly supple, silkily dovetailed in a thrilling panoply of colour, texture and taut-sprung rhythms". (The Scotsman)
