What they say…
Gifted with one of the most recognisable voices in popular music, Havens has a soulful singing style that remains as unique and ageless as when he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960s.

For over three decades, Havens has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. But it was Havens’ reputation as a live performer that first earned him widespread notice, beginning with his 1969 Woodstock appearance. As the festival’s first performer, he held the crowd spellbound for nearly three hours, called back for encore after encore. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual ‘Motherless Child’ that became ‘Freedom’, a song now considered to be the anthem of a generation. The subsequent movie release helped Havens reach a worldwide audience of millions.

Havens’ voice and unique guitar style has inspired and electrified audiences from the festival in 1969 to the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993 - coming full circle with the 30th Woodstock Anniversary celebration in 1999. Earlier this year, Havens performed at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, playing ‘Freedom’ in tribute to his fan and jury president Sean Penn. “I really sing songs that move me. I’m not in show business; I’m in the communications business. That’s what it’s about for me”. For the fans, it’s about how Havens embodies both.

With more than twenty-five albums released and a touring schedule that would kill many a younger man, Havens continues to view his calling as a higher one. He has just released a bold collection of new material on his latest CD, Nobody Lefty to Crown (on Verve Records).

In January 2007, Havens was one of many musicians who signed a charity guitar that helped Acoustic Sussex to raise over £10,000 for cancer charities, including St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley.

"Havens hasn't been doing this since the early 1960s without getting extraordinarily good at it… visually stunning, utterly transcendental..”

The Guardian

What we say…
Don’t even think about not coming to this show!  We caught up with him in London last year when he signed our ‘charity guitar’ – and it was of the best shows we’d seen for many a year.

Special support for the show is provided by Edwina Hayes, a singer songwriter who has been a regular performer on the UK acoustic scene since 1999. Apart from gigs for Acoustic Sussex in the past, Edwina has shared the stage with a host of well-known names and opened for artists as diverse as Van Morrison Loudon Wainwright and Jools Holland.

Don’t forget that as well as our own shows, the Acoustic Sussex website has a Regional Gig Guide and links to venues and clubs in the South East that offer folk, roots and acoustic music – and our MySpace site contains over 500 links to a variety of other MySpace ‘friends’ sites, including musicians, venues, magazines and lots more.
