Cecil Sharp House, London - 23rd October 2008
Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior is taking part in the BBC Electric Proms, playing her critically acclaimed album 'Seven for Old England' in a special show at Cecil Sharp House. Joining Maddy will be daughter Rose Kemp and friends & collaborators June Tabor and Tim Hart.
The festival – dedicated to creating new moments in music is an exciting show for Maddy, following a string of UK dates throughout October. Outside of being a founder and current member of legendary folk-rock pioneers, Steeleye Span, Maddy has built a solo career that has made increasing use of modern studio technology to create a musical landscape that is both familiar and challenging. In her work with the Carnival Band she has found herself performing alongside a range of medieval and unusual instruments. As a writer too, Maddy has continued to explore new ground. Always inspired by the myths and legends of the British Isles, she has combined both traditional numbers with her own interpretation and increasingly complex song cycles. In short, for one of the voices of folk music it has been a long, long time since Maddy Prior has made a traditional, acoustic 'folk' album. Until now that is.
Maddy’s new traditional, acoustic album, which she will be touring in October including the Electric Proms concert, has met great critical acclaim; Having ensconced herself in Cecil Sharpe House in London, working through the vast archive of traditional material, this has grown into a project that sees Maddy both looking forward to a new exciting chapter as well as revisiting her very earliest days in music.
