OCTOBER

14th ...ON STAGE
artists of the night:
ABDUL SHYLLON - an outstanding original artist/singer-songwriter from East London. - DANNY ELLIOTT - great lyrics and music from the soul and heart of a man who has lived and is living life to the full! - KATE WESTALL - has always sung and loved music! School shows, chapel & Eisteddfodds (Welsh cultural festival thing) etc. was where it all began for her. The first singing work she did was as the female vocalist for Welsh Swing Big Band The Skyliners in '99 for two years (you gotta love Glenn Miller!). Since then she has been involved as lead singer for numerous bands & trio's. Her styles include soul, folk, rock/indie, pop, jazz and funk. Kate also ventured into the world of dance & trance featuring as vocalist on 2 tracks of EP 'Life' by EMI DJ Andy Hunter. - STEVEN FINN - began playing in the folk clubs of Northern England when he was seventeen. His second ever public performance was supporting Isaac Guillory, a brilliant guitar player from New York, in the Poynton Folk Centre. Around this time Steven started playing guitar for British Harmonica Champion Dave Aston. After touring as support with The Beautiful South Steven formed a band with bodhran player John Joe Kelly (from Flook) and Andrew Dinan on fiddle. They recorded the album 'Before the flood' on Small World Records in 1999. Amongst the highlights was playing support for Elvis Costello at the Montreaux Jazz festival, playing to a packed Guardian tent at Glastonbury and performing to thousands in an old boat shed in remotest Iceland with Belle & Sebastian. Spring 2008 was spent recording his debut solo album 'Houdini's Blues', sung and played live. - SUNDAY DRIVER - "eclectic fusion of eastern and western styles". An arts council grant back in 2004 paid for training workshops with renowned sitarist Baluji Srivastav. This sparked their interest in Hindustani classical music and inspired Joel to take up the sitar. Two years on, his skill had outstripped even George Harrison's - he composed the melody to "Bol and Spoon" which formed the soundtrack for our award winning BBC Radio 4 show on 'Leprosy: a Forgotten Disease'. And Joel's notoriety on the gourd reached its zenith last year with a unique performance "Norwegian Wood" on the sitar for BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. Sunday Driver have played well over 100 gigs together over the years. Favourite "notches on the band bedpost" include the Cambridge Folk Festival, the Secret Garden Festival and a gig with the Grand Union jazz orchestra at the Cambridge Corn Exchange. As well as a slightly surreal appearance on Mel and Sue's BBC London radio show and numerous appearances on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. They've also been played on Classic FM's Chiller Cabinet.
