Music Matters
BBC Radio 3's Music Matters programme broadcasted a special edition on music in Ireland last Saturday. Presented by Tom Service, the programme included interviews with Toner Quinn (Editor of JMI), Senator David Norris, the Irish Composers' Collective (with a performance by Ensemble ICC) and Gerald Barry, as well as staff of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, the Contemporary Music Centre, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the new Wexford Opera House. The programme is available online until the end of the week. To listen, visit http://tinyurl.com/3t6z85
Tom Service also wrote enthusiastically in the Guardian about his visit. Read his article here: http://tinyurl.com/5x82d9

Offbeat
A new classical music radio show presented by the pianist Karismeh Felfeli is being broadcast on Dublin City 103.2 FM, from 2pm to 3pm every Thursday. The programme, Offbeat, also touches on electronic music, traditional music and jazz. Visit www.dublincityfm.ie

Free Content at www.thejmi.com
This week JMI has made some great articles from the archives available free-to-view at www.thejmi.com
Read an interview with the improvising pianist Paul G. Smyth in advance of his performance with English cellist Hannah Marshall at the Goethe-Insitut, Dublin, on 29 October.
The disintegration of genres is a running theme in the BBC Radio 3 Music Matters programme mentioned above. From 2007, then, read Toner Quinn's article, 'Traditional Music and the Avant-Garde', in which he writes, 'The idea of an avant-garde wing in Irish traditional music may seem a contradiction in terms, but it shouldn’t be'.
