SOUTHERN SONGS FORUM
Saturday 23rd February 8pm at the
LIMES HOTEL CATISFIELD
Catisfield Lane, Nr Fareham. PO15 5NN
M.C. Bob Askew
A chance to perform a traditional song and talk about it with others. Or just come to listen and talk. The emphasis will be on the discussion e.g. what the song is about, what you like about it, where the song came from, earlier performers of the song, etc.
The first Southern Songs Forum of 26th January was a great success. The discussions were very interesting, showing that there is much to talk about. I will certainly see two of the songs in a new light in future.
We mentioned the great variety of versions that are found in folk song, and that different people may have different feelings about the same song. Also that we were not looking for a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’opinion: we would accept the variety, and share our thoughts and knowledge.
We decided to define ‘traditional songs’ very widely. If you think your song may be traditional, do bring it along. The original intention was to focus on songs from the southern half of England, but we agreed to accept occasional songs beyond this geographical limit.
This is a new event, so come and try it.
