1) Guest Lecture in Algorithmic Composition by Dr. Michael Edwards

February 5th 2008, 5-7pm. Boydell Recital Room, House 5, Trinity College Dublin

The English composer Michael Edwards will be giving a presentation on algorithmic composition for both instrumental and electroacoustic works. Dr. Edwards is involved in composition for instrumental ensembles, electroacoustic works (studies and residencies at Stanford-CCRMA, IRCAM, ZKM), as well as the integration of the two, and he has recently added an emphasis on improvisation to his work. Performances of his compositions have included players and ensembles such as Garth Knox, the Klangforum Wien, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. 

The lecture he will be presenting is certain to be of interest to anybody involved in composition or music technology and all are welcome.

4) YCC Seeks Manager

The Young Composers' Collective welcomes applications for the position of Ensemble Manager. The role will involve the production of eight concerts over the course of a year, and management of the new YCC Ensemble. Responsibilities include all operational management, publicity and fundraising for the seven-piece ensemble. A part-time role, the successful applicant will work from home on a contract basis. Applicants must have arts event management experience, some musical knowledge anexcellent communication skills. The deadline for applications is Monday, 11 February 2008. 1. The competition is open for composers of any nationality born after July 1, 1958. A copy of an identity card must be enclosed.
2. The competition is anonymous: the authors that participate in the competition must send their composition in a closed envelope. On the envelope must be written a slogan of seven letters or numbers. The same slogan must be enclosed in a small closed envelope. In it there must be the name, a copy of the identity card, address, phone number and e-mail of the author. Every other sign, enclosed in the envelopes will be regarded as a way of violating the anonymity and will lead to exclusion of the candidate.
3. The works must include no more than the following instruments:
3 Fl (Fl III = Fl picc), 3 Ob (Ob III = C.ingl), 3 Cl ( Cl III = Cl basso), 3 Fg, 4 Cor, 3 Tr, 3 Trb, Tuba, Percussions (4 esecutori), Arpa, Pf, Arci (14, 12, 10, 8, 6).
4. Intonational and metre-and-rythm methods, typical for the Bulgarian national folklore must be used in the works. The theme of the competition for 2008 is “Bulgarian Symphonic Dances”.
5. The duration of the compositions must be between 12 and 15 minutes.
Every composer can participate with only one work, not performed and not represented in other competitions.
