Birmingham Jew’s harps and the Africa trade.
Ethnomusicologist Angela Impey, and Jew’s harp historian Michael Wright, are giving a lecture at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London at 5:15, 29th January 2008, on the topic ‘Unravelling the mystery of the Nguni Jew’s harp: The Birmingham-KwaZulu Natal Connection’. This looks at the manufacture and export of Jew’s harps from the UK (Michael Wright) and the import, distribution and adaptation of the instrument by theNguni into their mouthbow tradition (Angela Impey). While this is an internal lecture for the Postgraduate students, anyone who wishes to hear it from outside the Institute will be welcome and should contact Angela Impey at A16_at_soas_dot_ac_dot_uk for details.
