Please excuse my method of introduction,
but as you may be aware the Astor Theatre in Deal, is a small self funded venue,
which over the last 5 years have built up a respected programme of shows, that
have included Maddy Prior, John Renbourn, June Tabor, Ralph McTell, Bert Jansch
and of course Deal’s own Dave Cousins. We feel that over the last year or so
the Folk audience have been somewhat neglected, and as a consequence of this we
are proud to announce our Folk season for 2007 and thought that your members may
be interested in our forthcoming shows. ( I know that you are aware of the
artists but thought the information might be useful to you) Benny

Morning - SONGWRITING WORKSHOP with Benny Gallagher 11:00 am EVENING SHOW
8.00pm Possibly Britain's most underrated songwriter will be taking this
class exploring the skills of song writing. The writer of classics including
Breakaway; I Wanna Stay With You; Heart on My Sleeve; When I'm Dead and Gone and
so many more is also of course known for Gallagher and Lyle Phil

door Multi instrumentalist Phil Beer first began to play fiddle,
guitar, and mandolin whilst still at school . He played his first gig when he
was fourteen in a band called Retrospect with Richard Entwistle and other
musicians, and by the time he was sixteen he was performing regularly. Beer
worked with Paul Downes as a duo and also in the Arizona Smoke Revue. He was a
key member of Johnny Coppin's band (ex-Decameron), toured with Mike Oldfield in
1979 and also recorded some tracks at Oldfield's Througham studio. Phil joined
the Albion Band in 1984 and stayed with them until 1991, touring extensively at
home and abroad, and recording many albums. Show of Hands became a full-time
partnership from 1991. Phil continues to do session work, most notably on the
Rolling Stones Steel Wheels album. SEATED CABARET STYLE, WITH WAITRESS

Band featuring Pick Withers (Dire Straits/Bob Dylan) on drums. Perhaps best
known as the bass player in The Blues Band, his song writing talents are
respected by many and his song ’Green Stuff’ for example is the bands encore
anthem. Gary has a stunning new album out called ‘Human Spirit’ which features
guest appearances from not only all the members of The Blues Band but also
Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody from Whitesnake and Dennis Greaves and Mark
Feltham from Nine Below

Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick, two stalwarts of the folk scene, Howard
Evans and Roger Williams, the Home Service brass and sought after classical and
theatre brass players with country dance percussionist Martin Brinsford.Martin
Carthy has long been regarded as one of the principal figures in the British
folk revival - his voice and guitar being two of the most consistent and
distinctive sounds on the scene. It is well documented elsewhere that Carthy's
early work was an influence on Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Carthy's recording
career stretches from a 1963 ep by the Thamesiders with Davy Graham, through the
influential '60's recordings with Dave Swarbrick, two of the earliest and finest
albums by Steeleye Span, the Albion Country Band's splendid 'Battle Of The
Field', three remarkable records with the Watersons, to two albums with the
recent critically acclaimed family partnership - Waterson:Carthy. The two albums
with Brass Monkey are seen by many as the high points - to date - of this
distinguished discography.John Kirkpatrick - remarkable British king of the
squeezebox - has had a similarly illustrious and diverse career. The span of
Kirkpatrick's work is quite astounding: the solo work, the duo with Sue Harris,
a member of ensembles like the Albion Country Band, Steeleye Span and Umps and
Dumps, Morris dancer, accompanist to Richard Thompson and an enormous amount of
