Altan
Saturday 20
October 7.45pm
Gulbenkian
Theatre, Canterbury
"Traditional music and song from
Ireland delivered with grace,
passion, pride and skill by undoubted masters of the music".
Irish traditional band,
Altan will grace the Gulbenkian
stage as part of the Canterbury Festival. Altan are recognised as giant
figures within the world of folk music selling over one million
albums and filling concert halls from Dublin to Sydney. Led by
charismatic fiddle player and singer, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, the band play a
music that while solidly rooted in the past is, at the same time, a
contemporary and living music.
Altan provide a live
music experience that combines energy and poignancy, joy and
tenderness but ultimately one that reasserts the immense charm,
attraction and drive in great traditional music. Twin fiddles
and accordion are underpinned by guitar and bouzouki with soulful
songs in their native Gaelic and ballads in English.
"Thought by
many to be the finest traditional Irish combo working today, Altan seamlessly
blend dazzling instrumental prowess and the gorgeously delicate vocals of
Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh"

"Mairead Ni
Mhaonaighs' beautiful airs had us begging for more. Every corner seemed to
echo with her voice long after the music had
stopped"
