Dukeıs Room, The Grand Hotel, Eastbourne
Imtiaz Dharker, Choman Hardi, Maria Jastrzebska and Mandy Murray
Eastbourne International Poetry Evening
Readings by three poets with highly individual voices that highlight the way
wider political and social patterns distort and colour personal experience
and the perceptions of self and others.
Imtiaz Dharker was born in Pakistan, grew up a Muslim Calvinist in a Lahori
household in Glasgow and eloped with a Hindu Indian to live in Bombay. She
now lives in London and Bombay and has published three collections of poetry
with Bloodaxe Books, most recently The terrorist at my table.
Maria Jastrzebska was born in Poland and now lives in Sussex. Her most
recent collection, Syrena, explores themes of family, displacement and
belonging. According to legend, Syrena is a fighting mermaid with sword and
shield that guards the poetıs home city of Warsaw,.
Choman Hardi was born in Iraqi Kurdistan and lived variously in Iran and
Iraq before her family were finally forced into exile by Saddam Husseinıs
notorious chemical weapon attack on the Kurds. She now lives in Britain and
her first collection of poems in English, published by Bloodaxe, is entitled
Life For Us.
Plus: heart rending traditional music for solo concertina by Mandy Murray.
Venue: Dukeıs Room, The Grand Hotel, King Edwardıs Parade, Eastbourne, East
Sussex BN21 4EQ.
Tickets £5.00 on the door only.
