4] THE FOLK DIARY ON LINE
THE FOLK DIARY is now available on-line. For some years now, all the listings which THE FOLK DIARY gives has been given in date order on THE SUSSEX FOLK GUIDE WEBSITE but now, the entire magazine is available on-line; go to the website for the FOLK AT THE ROYAL OAK, LEWES
www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~tinvic
and then click on the "Folk Diary"
symbol. You will need Adobe ACROBAT READER to read the pages and, frankly, unless you are on broadband, the page will take too long to download. The size of each page is given by each page link and the content of each page is indicated. Issue no 221 (August/September 2006) is the issue that are currently on-line. The web counter shows that it is a service that is being widely used.

5] SHIRLEY COLLINS - "AMERICA OVER THE WATER".
Some of you will already know that we are involved with Shirley Collins & Pip Barnes in an extensive tour this autumn with a show that is based on Shirley's wonderful book. The first four appearances have gone really well.
Here is a synopsis of the show:-
" America Over the Water is a unique and powerful show that takes you on an epic song-hunting journey through the heartlands of America's deep South in 1959, when Shirley Collins, a young folk-singer from Sussex accompanied America's renowned folklorist, Alan Lomax. This enthralling story told by Shirley and actor Pip Barnes with passion and humour, is illustrated with rare and remarkable music and pictures."
The show will tour in the autumn with the support of the Arts Council. A new paperback edition of the book is due to be published in early October. The tour continues this week with the following dates:-

7] INSTRUMENTAL & VOCAL WORKSHOPS IN LEWES As I am the one sending these email circulars, I get frequent phone calls and emails enquiring about these workshops, but I am not the organiser! I am just trying to help publicise them because they are such a good idea.
The Saturday daytime instrumental workshops in Lewes organised by Valmai Goodyear - valmaigoodyear_at_aol_dot_com (01273) 476757 . (Incidentally, it would be interesting to know if there are any other two folk clubs in the UK that are so close together. The Lewes Arms and the Royal Oak are about 100 yards apart from one another, yet both have been operating successfully for decades. As well as being geographically close, we also co-operate closely despite being totally different in organisers and resident singers.) LEWES ARMS FOLK CLUB WORKSHOPS 2006 Workshops last a full Saturday and the tutor performs at the club in the evening. Booking forms are available from the club and can be printed from the website.

8] FOLK AND WORLD MUSIC ON ROCKET FM LEWES 87.8FM Because of his commitment to touring with Shirley Collins and the "America Over The Water" show, Vic Smith's programmes on this year's season of ROCKET FM, the independent community radio station for Lewes and the Ouse valley has had to be scaled down. He will be presenting two one-hour programmes during the station's sixteen days on the air.
These will be on
Wednesday 25th October 9-10pm
Wednesday 1st November 9-10pm

9] REGULAR SESSIONS IN THE LEWES/BRIGHTON AREA - NEW WEBSITE The organisers of the two Lewes folk clubs have been discussing the need for a website to bring attention to the many and varied regular song and tune sessions in our area (Well, those that don't mind being publicised anyway!) Bryan Creer has decided to take on the task and he is building up a list of them at
members.aol.com/LewesArmsFolk/Sessions.html
Have a look and if there are any you think that Bryan has missed - contact him on Bryancreer_at_aol_dot_com
