3] THE FOLK DIARY
Most of the listings on the Sussex Folk Guide website are taken from the paper magazine, THE FOLK DIARY Issue no 220 covers the months of August and September and this is now available. It is packed with adverts for various folk festivals, folk music record companies, specialist shops, instrument makers and other services as well as details of all the folk song and dance events in our area. To obtain copies of this free magazine as it is published, please send SAE's to Vic Smith at the address below. (Make sue that the SAE stamp meets the new postal charges!) It is also the address to send album review copies to. The copy date for the October/November issue is today, but we may just be able to squeeze your advert in if you contact us by return. Potential advertisers are also asked to contact Vic for a statement of our advertising rates.
4] THE FOLK DIARY ON LINE
THE FOLK DIARY is now available on-line. For some years now, all the listings which THE FOLK DIARY gives has been given in date order on THE SUSSEX FOLK GUIDE WEBSITE but now, the entire magazine is available on-line; go to the website for the FOLK AT THE ROYAL OAK, LEWES
and then click on the "Folk Diary"
You will need Adobe ACROBAT READER to read the pages and, frankly, unless you are on broadband, the page will take too long to download. The size of each page is given by each page link and the content of each page is indicated. Issue no 220 (August/September 2006) is the issue that are currently on-line. The web counter shows that it is a service that is being widely used.
5] SHIRLEY COLLINS - "AMERICA OVER THE WATER".
Some of you will already know that we are involved with Shirley Collins & Pip Barnes in an extensive tour this autumn with a show that is based on Shirley's wonderful book. Here is a synopsis of the show:-
" America Over the Water is a unique and powerful show that takes you on an epic song-hunting journey through the heartlands of America's deep South in 1959, when Shirley Collins, a young folk-singer from Sussex accompanied America's renowned folklorist, Alan Lomax. This enthralling story told by Shirley and actor Pip Barnes with passion and humour, is illustrated with rare and remarkable music and pictures."
The show will tour in the autumn with the support of the Arts Council. A new paperback edition of the book is due to be published in late September/early October.
Please note: The performance originally listed for the Purcell Room on the South Bank in London on Friday September 29th is no longer going ahead, but negotiations are currently under way for a performance in October or November instead. Details will be posted at

7] INSTRUMENTAL & VOCAL WORKSHOPS IN LEWES As I am the one sending these email circulars, I get frequent phone calls and emails enquiring about these workshops, but I am not the organiser! I am just trying to help publicise them because they are such a good idea.
The Saturday daytime instrumental workshops in Lewes organised by Valmai Goodyear - valmaigoodyear_at_aol_dot_com (01273) 476757 . (Incidentally, it would be interesting to know if there are any other two folk clubs in the UK that are so close together. The Lewes Arms and the Royal Oak are about 100 yards apart from one another, yet both have been operating successfully for decades. As well as being geographically close, we also co-operate closely despite being totally different in organisers and resident singers.) LEWES ARMS FOLK CLUB WORKSHOPS 2006 Workshops last a full Saturday and the tutor performs at the club in the evening. Booking forms are available from the club and can be printed from the website.

This includes the work that we are doing to help to set up a new music school in Brikama, teaching kora, balafon, djembe and jali singing to European tourists to The Gambia.
We arrived back from our last visit to The Gambia with over 200 of the lovely batiks made by Buba Drammeh to sell through this site and we photograph each one to show on the site:-
The Compound Sounds website can now accept payment for batiks and for the two albums by the kora maestro Jali Sherrifo Konteh by Paypal and most major credit cards.
