Before
then, a reminder that we have the excellent Johnny Dickinson
appearing at the same venue this Monday, September 11, with support
from Carrie Tree.
Johnny was nominated for a Horizon
Award and Musician of the
Year in the 2006 BBC Folk Awards. Carrie Tree
is a tender-voiced Brighton-based singer-songwriter who has supported
Damien Rice on his UK tour (we think this is a young lady who is going
places). See below for more
information. | |||

Johnny Dickinson is a fast rising talent bound for international recognition, with a unique, individual style of playing that crosses Celtic flavours with American Blues. Regarded by many as the UK's most potent slide player, combined with an earthy yet understated vocal style, Johnny's music makes for truly compelling listening. His debut album, Castles and Old Kings, helped in his nomination for the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award. He then released Border Ballads as part of the Northumbrian Anthology, to further acclaim. In 2005, he was nominated for Best Musician in the 2006 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. He has recently toured with such guitar greats as Tommy Emmanuel, Jan Akkerman, John Martyn, Jerry Donahue and Kelly Joe Phelps, and is now establishing a formidable reputation as a solo performer. In May this year, his 4th solo CD, Sketches From the Road was released. Recorded totally solo and live, it captures the essence of a Johnny Dickinson concert. John
Renbourn:
"I'd go a long way to listen to Johnny
Dickinson. You hear a lot of
good influences in his music but the result is something special. For me his playing really hits the
spot."
Tommy
Emmanuel: "Johnny is a soulful player, singer, and a
damn good writer! Don´t miss him!" The
Scotsman “If this had been an edition of
The Old Grey Whistle Test, broadcast on national TV, Dickinson would be a
guitar hero by tea-time tomorrow” In support for this show is Brighton’s Carrie Tree – a tender-voiced singer in the mould of Martha Tilston. She recently supported Damien Rice on his UK tour. We think this is a young lady who is going places. You can hear samples of Carrie’s music on her MySpace website |

Teddy
Thompson is the son of Richard and
Linda Thompson, the finest folk-rock duo in Britain in the days when they
were together. London-born, New York based Teddy has a musical wisdom
beyond his years. His much-praised new album ‘Separate Ways’ distils
perfectly what makes Thompson an artist to take notice of – honest songs,
honestly performed. In 2004, Teddy
featured on the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning film, Brokeback Mountain. He sings two
songs, one a duet with friend Rufus Wainwright. In 2005, Teddy performed
on the television programme, Later with
Jools Holland. This year, he headlined at the Cambridge Folk Festival (click here
to see a video
of Teddy’s performance at Cambridge, on the BBC
website). "Ten confident and smart folk-pop
tunes filled with fetching hooks and engaging melodies perfectly suited to
his warm, winsome voice." All Music
Guide "You'd be hard-pressed to find a prettier set of
songs about love and disappointment...". CD Now "An impressive display of how far he has progressed, both as a singer and as a songwriter." Robin Denselow, The Guardian And, returning to our programme after nearly two years, Teddy will be joined by his sister, Kamila Thompson. WE RECOMMEND BUYING
TICKETS EARLY FOR THIS SHOW |

This
collaboration between Billy
Mitchell and Bob Fox
has been a long time coming. Both men learnt their musical
trade around Tyneside and have been delighting audiences at home and away
for many years. Billy spent eight years as front man of the legendary Lindisfarne, until their retirement in 2003. In the '70s he founded the seminal Jack the Lad. He has acted (himself) and sung all around the world and recently released his first solo album, 'The Devil's Ground'. Bob Fox has one of the greatest voices on the folk circuit and is a wonderful guitarist too. His musical associates include Fairport Convention, who's annual reunion he occasionally hosts and who grace his recent CD, Dreams Never Leave You. Following his nomination in 2003 as Best Folk Singer and Best Traditional song (with The Hush) Bob gained nominations in 2004 as Best Folk Singer plus Best Original song for his version of Chris Leslie's "My Love is in America" They are both musicians of stunning ability who can bring magic into any auditorium. Now, after many years of mutual admiration, they will share a stage and pool the wealth of talent at their disposal. In concert Billy and Bob will perform alone and together, the material will be cherry-picked from their solo work and the combined back catalogues of Lindisfarne, Jack the Lad, The Hush and Bob Fox & Stu Luckley, to produce a memorable night of songs. French-Algerian
Pierre Bensusan is rated as
one of the top 10 finger-style guitar players in the world, and one of the
most eloquent and diverse musicians of our time, effortlessly moving from
classical to jazz to ethnic. In solo concerts that have been described as “a must-have experience“ sometimes lasting up to 3 hours), each performance is brimming with passion, drama, rich ornamentation, grace and sheer joy, along with some of the most dazzling acoustic guitar playing on the planet. "Pierre’s music
gives me the shakes. No other guitarist shares his strange gifts of sophistication,
accessibility and downright joy.
Even at its most complex, Pierre’s music only needs ears to be
enjoyed." Leo KottkeJoining
Pierre exclusively for this concert is Matthew Ord, a superb young guitarist
who combines an impressive picking technique with a feel for the blues
that's rare at any age and remarkable in such a young player, with echoes
of John Fahey and John Renbourn. We think Matthew will reach wider
attention very soon, so come and get an early
taster. This
is a fabulous double-bill that we cannot recommend highly
enough. |
