Dear Dr Allen,

I have recently started a research project at the Greenwich Maritime Institute
as a post-doctoral researcher. I am to perform an audit of all primary and
secondary sources available for a potential project which would examine how
maritime related activities (eg fishing, smuggling, shipowning, ship building,
river trade, tourism, the Navy etc) shaped local communities in the south east
of England, namely the Kent and Sussex coast c.1700-c.1914.

One of the areas I am particularly interested in revolves around the cultural
aspects of Kent's maritime history, especially in local sea songs/poems/rhymes,
local customs and superstitions and dances/entertainment connected to people's
life experience of living on/around the coast.

If you or anyone connected with your group specialises in Kentish folk songs of
the 18th and 19th centuries I would welcome any advice or guidance you are able
to provide.

Yours sincerely,

Emma Mahoney
